Materials explained
Solid wood vs engineered wood furniture
Furniture listings use several terms for wood. Knowing them helps you judge durability and value.
Solid wood
Made from whole pieces of timber such as oak, pine or walnut. It is strong and can be sanded and refinished, but it is heavier and costs more. It can move slightly with humidity.
Plywood
Thin layers of wood glued in alternating directions. It is strong and stable, and it is common in good quality frames and drawers.
MDF and particleboard
MDF is made from fine wood fibers; particleboard from larger chips. Both are usually covered with veneer or laminate. They are affordable and smooth but do not like moisture, and screws can loosen after repeated assembly.
Veneer
A thin layer of real wood over another core. Quality veneer looks like solid wood at a lower price.
